Silly Helmet Covers was an fun idea created back in 2006 when I decided I needed to make my motorcycle helmet look a bit different from a plain black Jet type, preferably by texturing the surface. The first attempt was to produce a Roman Centurion design made out of Plaster of Paris from which a mould was made to produce a rubber cover made from liquid latex, complete with red hair. Fellow bikers, seeing me wearing this, asked me to make them one but they wanted something more aggressive and as one of the local clubs was known as the Saxon raiders, we designed the Mk1 to look like the helmets the Vikings wore, with 2 bull horns. Initially it was only available in matt jet black but by applying silver to the dye as well, the final colour produced a shiny metallic Pewter effect which the majority of the customers like. As demand for them increased, the manufacturing method had to change to use multiple clay moulds. In the first year, we produced 600 covers and realised we were on to a good idea for a fun business, so the designs and applications were copyrighted and protected. Since then, the Mk2, Mk3 Mk4 & Spikey were produced to fit different styles of helmets and more new designs are being made then prototype tested. (they have to cope with high wind speeds upto 140kmh (100mph), torrential rain and freezing snow) Today, we have sold over 5000 Silly Helmet Covers to various types of clients all over the world and I wear the Mk2 Black Horny whenever I'm out on my motorbike, a Yamaha Virago 1100.
